UCL Matchday 1: The Giants Have Arrived
The 2026/27 UEFA Champions League has wasted no time reminding football fans why it is Europe's biggest club competition.
The opening matchday delivered goals, comebacks and strong statements from several of the tournament favourites. Manchester United, Barcelona, Real Madrid, Bayern Munich, Manchester City, Arsenal and Liverpool all opened their campaigns with victories.
And while it is far too early to talk about the trophy, some teams have already sent a message.

🔴 Manchester United 4-0 Sabah: Old Trafford gets its European roar back
Manchester United's return to the Champions League could hardly have gone better.
United defeated debutants Sabah 4-0 at Old Trafford, with Matheus Cunha, Bruno Fernandes, Benjamin Šeško and Lisandro Martínez finding the net.
The clean sheet may be just as important as the four goals for Michael Carrick's side. After an inconsistent start domestically, United needed a convincing European performance — and they delivered.
The bigger challenge comes next: maintaining this momentum against stronger opposition.
🔵 Barcelona 5-1 Feyenoord: Barça send an attacking warning
Barcelona produced one of the most eye-catching performances of Matchday 1, hammering Feyenoord 5-1.
The Catalan giants looked dangerous throughout, with Raphinha scoring twice, while the attack showed the kind of firepower that could make Barcelona serious contenders again.
Five goals on opening night is more than just three points — it is a statement.
⚪ Real Madrid 2-1 Inter: Mbappé starts the campaign
Real Madrid were made to work for their victory against Inter Milan, but the European giants got the job done at the Santiago Bernabéu.
Kylian Mbappé opened the scoring before Federico Valverde added another, with Inter pulling one back late.
It was not Madrid at their most dominant, but Champions League campaigns are often about winning difficult games — and Madrid know that better than anyone.
🔴 Bayern Munich 5-0 Bodø/Glimt: A statement win
Bayern Munich were ruthless.
A 5-0 demolition of Bodø/Glimt underlined their attacking depth, with Michael Olise scoring twice, while Jamal Musiala, Harry Kane and Alphonso Davies also got on the scoresheet.
Bayern's opening-night performance immediately puts them among the teams to watch as the league phase develops.
🔵 Manchester City 2-0 Porto: Haaland does Haaland things
Manchester City began their campaign with a professional 2-0 away victory against Porto.
The difference-maker was, predictably, Erling Haaland.
The Norwegian striker scored both goals as City controlled the game and returned from Portugal with maximum points.
For City, the biggest positive was not simply Haaland's brace but the ability to win a difficult European away game without conceding.
🔴 Arsenal 1-0 Napoli: Arteta's men pass a big test
Arsenal had perhaps the most difficult opening assignment among the seven teams highlighted here.
They travelled to Napoli and returned with a valuable 1-0 victory.
It was not spectacular, but it was exactly the kind of result that can become extremely valuable over an eight-game league phase. Arsenal showed defensive discipline and took their opportunity when it mattered.
🔴 Liverpool 2-1 Atlético Madrid: Another comeback
Liverpool also had to fight for their opening-night victory.
Atlético Madrid took the lead, but Liverpool responded to win 2-1 at Anfield.
The result showcased Liverpool's resilience and gave them three crucial points against one of Europe's traditionally difficult opponents.
What Matchday 1 tells us
The opening round has produced a fascinating early picture.
Barcelona and Bayern provided the biggest attacking statements, while Manchester United enjoyed the emotional boost of returning to Europe's elite with a convincing home victory.
Real Madrid and Manchester City showed their experience by winning tricky fixtures, while Arsenal and Liverpool demonstrated that grinding out three points can be just as important as putting on a five-goal show.
But this is only Matchday 1.
The new Champions League league phase gives every club eight matches before the knockout picture takes shape.
The real question is no longer who started well.
