The 2026/27 Premier League season is already producing plenty of talking points after an action-packed Matchweek 2. Ten matches produced 32 goals, with Manchester United responding emphatically to their opening-day defeat, Manchester City maintaining their perfect start and Arsenal continuing to look extremely difficult to beat.
Chelsea also survived a seven-goal thriller, while Newcastle United claimed an impressive away win at Tottenham. At the other end, Tottenham, Aston Villa and Crystal Palace remain without a point after two matches.

Manchester United 5–2 Ipswich: Fernandes Steals the Show
The biggest individual performance of the weekend came at Old Trafford.
After losing 2–0 to Hull City on the opening weekend, Manchester United needed a response and delivered it in spectacular fashion against Ipswich Town.
Captain Bruno Fernandes scored a hat-trick and provided an assist, directly contributing to four of United's five goals. It was his third Manchester United hat-trick in all competitions.
Fernandes' performance was particularly significant because it transformed the mood around United after their disappointing opening-day result.
Bryan Mbeumo was also on the scoresheet as United eventually ran out 5–2 winners.
Fernandes' display was so impressive that he produced a record 23-point Fantasy Premier League haul, his highest single-match total in the competition.

Manchester City 4–1 Crystal Palace: Cherki and Haaland Run Riot
Manchester City delivered arguably the most convincing team performance of the weekend.
Pep Guardiola's side travelled to Selhurst Park and came away with a 4–1 victory, maintaining their 100% record.
The headline performers were Rayan Cherki and Erling Haaland.
Cherki scored twice, including an outstanding individual effort, while Haaland added a brace of his own. The Frenchman has now made an immediate impact at City, and his performance against Palace earned him a place among the official Player of the Matchweek nominees.
Haaland's two goals also continued his remarkable scoring record at Selhurst Park.
City therefore have six points from two matches, with six goals scored and only two conceded.
Chelsea 4–3 Brighton: Seven-Goal Thriller
If City provided control and United provided a statement victory, Chelsea and Brighton provided the chaos.
Chelsea edged Brighton 4–3 in one of the most entertaining games of Matchweek 2.
The result keeps Chelsea's perfect start intact under Xabi Alonso, with the Blues sitting among the four teams with six points after two games.
Seven goals were scored, highlighting both Chelsea's attacking potential and the defensive questions Alonso still has to address.
For Brighton, it was another reminder of their attacking threat following their four-goal opening-weekend victory over Aston Villa.
Arsenal Stay Perfect With Villa Victory
Arsenal quietly continued their excellent start by beating Aston Villa 1–0 at Villa Park.
Bukayo Saka scored the only goal, while Arsenal's defence secured another clean sheet. The Gunners have now won both of their opening matches without conceding a goal.

The bigger question is whether Arsenal's defensive solidity can turn their excellent start into another serious title challenge.
Newcastle Shock Tottenham With Comfortable Win
Tottenham's difficult start continued as Newcastle United won 2–0 in north London.
After losing 3–0 to Brentford in Matchweek 1, Tottenham are now pointless after two games and have yet to score.
Newcastle, meanwhile, have four points after two matches.
One of the standout performers was Nico Gonzalez, who impressed on his Newcastle debut. He completed 48 passes and helped control the midfield as Newcastle secured their first victory under Matthias Jaissle.
Liverpool Drop More Points
Liverpool were held to a 2–2 draw by Nottingham Forest at Anfield.
The champions have now drawn both of their opening matches and sit on just two points.
Morgan Gibbs-White was one of Forest's standout performers, scoring a penalty and providing an assist.
For Liverpool, the result is an early warning that last season's standards will need to be maintained if they are to remain in the title race.
The Biggest Shock of Week 2
Tottenham's disastrous start
Tottenham's back-to-back defeats are arguably the biggest concern after two rounds.
A 3–0 defeat against Brentford was followed by a 2–0 home loss to Newcastle. Tottenham have scored zero goals and conceded five.
They are currently joint-bottom on goal difference alongside Crystal Palace and Aston Villa.
However, it is far too early to make definitive predictions about relegation after only two matches.

What Week 2 Tells Us
Manchester City and Arsenal are setting the early pace. Both have won twice, but City's superior goals scored puts them top.
