India won the ODI series. West Indies won the final statement.
India walked away with the three-match ODI series 2-1, but the scoreline does not tell the whole story.
The first two games were almost completely controlled by the hosts. India won the opening ODI in Thiruvananthapuram by eight wickets before producing one of the most remarkable run chases of the series in Guwahati.
West Indies posted 405/7, but India chased it down in just 43.3 overs, reaching 406/2. Shubman Gill smashed an unbeaten double-century while Rohit Sharma scored 101, with the pair adding a record 255-run opening partnership.
Then came New Chandigarh.
India scored 351/7, seemingly putting another huge total on the board. Instead, West Indies produced a chase for the history books.
Shai Hope's unbeaten 162 off 143 balls guided West Indies to 352/5 in 48.2 overs — their highest successful ODI run chase.
So, India won the series.
But West Indies finished it with momentum.
And that makes the upcoming T20I series much more interesting.
ODI Series: The results
| Match | Result |
|---|---|
| 1st ODI – Thiruvananthapuram | India won by 8 wickets |
| 2nd ODI – Guwahati | India won by 8 wickets |
| 3rd ODI – New Chandigarh | West Indies won by 5 wickets |
| Series | India won 2-1 |
The first ODI saw centuries from Virat Kohli and Shubman Gill, with India chasing 296 comfortably. Kohli also crossed the massive milestone of 15,000 ODI runs.
The second ODI was even more spectacular.
India chased 405, and Gill's unbeaten 200 became the headline. Rohit's century and the 255-run opening partnership made it a batting masterclass.
But West Indies answered in the third game.
And Shai Hope showed exactly why this West Indies team cannot be taken lightly.
Now comes the T20I battle
The format changes.
The teams change.
And so does the strategy.
India's T20I squad will be led by Shreyas Iyer, with Sanju Samson, Ishan Kishan, Abhishek Sharma, Tilak Varma, Shivam Dube and teenage sensation Vaibhav Sooryavanshi among the batting options.
The bowling group includes Arshdeep Singh, Kuldeep Yadav, Axar Patel, Washington Sundar, Ravi Bishnoi and Mayank Yadav.
West Indies, meanwhile, have brought in Shimron Hetmyer and CPL performer Kamil Pooran, adding more firepower to a side that has already shown it can score heavily against India.
And that is where this series becomes fascinating.
India vs West Indies T20I schedule
The five-match series begins on October 6 in Lucknow and ends on October 17 in Bengaluru. All five matches are scheduled for 7 PM IST.

| 1st T20I | October 6 | Hyderabad |

India national cricket team will enter the series with a strong T20 record against West Indies cricket team. India have won 20 of the 31 T20Is between the sides, with West Indies winning 10.
But recent history offers West Indies some hope.
The Caribbean side won the last five-match bilateral T20I series between the teams, taking the 2023 series 3-2.
What should we expect from India?
1. A completely different batting combination
Don't expect the ODI top order to simply continue into the T20Is.
With Shreyas Iyer leading, India have several players competing for limited batting positions.
Abhishek Sharma brings explosive power at the top.
Sanju Samson and Ishan Kishan provide wicketkeeping and batting options.
Tilak Varma adds middle-order flexibility.
And then there is Vaibhav Sooryavanshi.
The young batter will naturally attract plenty of attention, but the bigger question is whether India use him immediately or gradually introduce him into the series.
2. Mayank Yadav is one to watch
India have brought Mayank Yadav back into the T20I squad.
His pace gives India something different.
With Arshdeep Singh providing left-arm variety and Kuldeep Yadav offering attacking wrist-spin, India have the ingredients for a bowling attack capable of controlling different phases of a T20 innings.
Jasprit Bumrah, however, is being rested as part of workload management.
That means others will have to take responsibility.
What should we expect from West Indies?
This is where the series could become unpredictable.
West Indies have already demonstrated that they are capable of chasing a huge total against India.
Shai Hope's 162* will give the visitors plenty of confidence.
Then there is Shimron Hetmyer, returning to the squad for the T20Is, and Kamil Pooran, who comes in after an impressive CPL campaign.
West Indies also have the natural advantage of being comfortable with aggressive T20 cricket.
If they can survive India's spinners through the middle overs, their power hitters could make the final five overs very interesting.
Three battles that could decide the series
Shreyas Iyer vs West Indies' pace attack
India's new T20 captain will have the responsibility of setting the tone.
Can Iyer combine stability with the aggression required in modern T20 cricket?
That will be one of the first things to watch.
India's spin attack vs West Indies' power hitters
Kuldeep Yadav, Axar Patel and Ravi Bishnoi could be crucial.
West Indies will look to attack them.
India will want wickets rather than simply containment.
That middle-overs battle could decide several matches.
Sanju Samson vs Ishan Kishan
India have two experienced wicketkeeping options in the squad.
Both can change a game quickly.
The selection battle itself will be interesting, particularly because India also have several other batting options.
The bigger picture: 2027 is already on the horizon
The ODI series was not just another bilateral assignment.
India are building towards the 2027 ODI World Cup, with Shubman Gill leading the ODI side and the team increasingly looking to settle its core combination. Gill has already indicated that the time for excessive experimentation is running short.
The T20I series has a different purpose.
Here, India can explore combinations, give opportunities to younger players and build depth ahead of the next major T20 cycle.
That makes players such as Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, Mayank Yadav, Abhishek Sharma and Prince Yadav particularly interesting.
Can West Indies upset India?
Absolutely.
The ODI finale proved that.
West Indies chased 352 against an Indian side containing several experienced players. Hope's innings showed that the visitors have the ability to stay calm when the required run rate climbs.
But T20 cricket offers a different challenge.
There is less time to recover from a poor powerplay, one over can change the match and individual match-ups become even more important.
India's depth gives them plenty of options.
West Indies' explosiveness gives them a route to challenge that depth.
That combination should make this five-match series a lot closer than the ODI scoreline might suggest.
What to expect from the T20I series
